Edelweiss (エーデルワイス, Ēderuwaisu) is a Japanese adult visual novel developed by OVERDRIVE and released in Japan on December 12, 2006.[1][2] then globally through MangaGamer on September 20, 2008.[3] Blending fantasy elements, particularly alchemy, with slice-of-life storytelling, the game unfolds within an all-girls academy.[4] The game features five different romanceable girls, each with their own unique storyline for the protagonist.[5]
This project is OVERDRIVE's debut game as a company.[1] As well as MangaGamer's first translation project. Due to complaints reguarding its translation MangaGamer released an improvied localization in January 21, 2011.[6]
The game's lead artist, Shinji Katakura, and director, Hiroshi "bamboo" Takeuchi were hosted on Anime Expo 2011 in Los Angeles.[7]
A fandisc, Edelweiss Eiden Fantasia (エーデルワイス 詠伝ファンタジア, Ēderuwaisu eiden fantajī), was released exclusively for Windows on August 29, 2008.[8][9] It contains two storylines for previous side characters Takase Sakura (高瀬 さくら) and Fujisaki Rin (藤崎 凛).[10] The fandisc was released in English on March 20, 2010.[11]
Gameplay
Players advance the story by clicking the screen or pressing the enter key to read dialogue from various characters, as well as the protagonist’s soliloquies and scene descriptions. As a result, the perspective rarely shifts from the main character’s point of view.
Occasionally, players are given choices that determine in the long run which character’s storyline they will follow.
Plot
Setting
The story is set entirely on a fictitious floating island called Eiden in Japan,[12][13][14] featuring a rustic small town near the coast and an ancient girls-only academy perched at the island’s peak.[2] Although the exact year is never explicitly stated, the events are implied to take place in the early 2000s, as that is the window of time in which the novel was being worked on.[12]
A core concept of the visual novel is that alchemy is real and plays a significant role in everyday life on the mysterious island, powering boats, improving crop yields, and even enhancing the flavor of food.[12] Though alchemy is taught at the island’s academy alongside other subjects, it remains a difficult skill to learn, and few are able to truly grasp it, let alone master it.
Story
The novel opens with the protagonist, Haruma Kazushi (春間 一志), and his three male friends: Horikawa Masao (堀川 昌央), nicknamed ‘Pierre’; Jinnai Toshiaki (陣内 敏明), nicknamed ‘Appo’ due to his distinctive apple-stem-like hairstyle; and Kudou (工藤)—traveling to the island to enroll in its girls-only academy as part of a special student exchange program.[13] As the only male students admitted, the group joins primarily out of boredom and curiosity. However, their underlying motivation is to pursue romantic relationships with the female students. Along with them is the homeroom teacher of their previous school, Yagami Hiromu (八神 裕), and an upperclassman nicknamed Panchu (パンチュ).[4][15]
The quartet undergoes a series of comically humiliating experiences, which ultimately contribute to their emotional growth and the development of strong bonds with the female cast.

Reception
Edelweiss
In general, the game received lukewarm reception both from the public and the critics. On the visual novel database it received an overall rating of 7.1/10 by the users[16], placing itself at the 3322th spot of highest rated visual novel as of July 2025.
UK Anime Network awarded Edelweiss a score of 7 out of 10[15], citing inconsistent drama across its various storylines. The review highlights one particular route as extremely impactful, especially given the overall comedic tone of the visual novel. It also notes the frequent use of over-the-top humor, much of it centered around sex jokes, acknowledging that while the humor is immature, it suits the tone and scope of Edelweiss.[15] Although the title does not achieve the same emotional depth as KiraKira, another visual novel by OVERDRIVE, the reviewer concludes that Edelweiss remains a fun and enjoyable experience.[15]
Edelweiss Eiden Fantasia
As on July 2025, with 1308 votes and an overall score of 6.93/10 on VNDB (the visual novel database), the fandisc stands slightly lower than the original game, at the 4606th spot of highest rated visual novel.
