Gimle Basket is a men's basketball club based in Årstad (Bergen), Norway. The team competes in the BLNO and hosts its home games at the Gimlehallen.
History
Gimle Basketball Club was founded in 1972 by a group of ninth-grade students at Gimle School in Bergen. The club emerged from school-organized youth activities, where basketball was initially played as a warm-up during volleyball sessions. Interest in basketball grew rapidly, and within a few years, Gimle had multiple teams participating in local leagues.[1]
In the late 1970s, the club adopted the name Gimle Basketball Club. In 1979, Gimle qualified for Norway’s top basketball division, 1. divisjon, with additional players from Katten, a leading second-division team at the time. Gimle won its qualification matches and was promoted alongside Ammerud. The club’s first season at the highest level was challenging, as most competing teams included foreign players, while Gimle did not. Throughout the 1980s, the club alternated between the first and second divisions.[1]
In 1993, Gimle won the Norwegian championship, becoming the first men’s team outside the Oslo area to do so. After relegation in 1997, the club did not participate in the inaugural BLNO season in 2000. Gimle returned to the top league in 2007 and has since maintained a regular presence. The men’s team has won four Norwegian championships, with the latest title earned in 2023.[1]
Gimlehallen
As basketball was a relatively new sport in the area, it received limited priority for training time in municipal facilities. This led the club to begin planning its own arena in 1980. After several challenges, Gimlehallen was completed in 1984 at a cost of 2.2 million NOK. Due to budget constraints, the club initially did not have its own locker rooms and borrowed facilities from neighboring Bergenshallen. A key decision during construction was to install a parquet floor rather than a painted concrete surface, despite the higher cost. This flooring was well-regarded by players and remained in use until it was replaced in 2014.[1]
