Background

"On My Own", the only single from his mixtape Keep It Goin Xav, was released on SoundCloud on January 8, 2024.[1] Which was followed by the release of the rest of the mixtape on January 15[2], on SoundCloud before its release to other streaming services on January 21.[3][4] The mixtape draws influences from Atlanta trap, Chicago drill and jerk.[5][6] Alphonse Pierre of Pitchfork described the mixtape as a "look-at-how-far-I've-come project", calling the music "vibrant, improvisatory, and fun as hell".[7][8]

On January 27, 2024 Xavier released a music video for "Special," which was followed with a video for "Need Me," on November 30, 2024, the latter track ends with an audio clip of him in conversation with the mixtape's host, DJ Rennesy during an interview, similar clips are placed throughout the album.[9][6][5]

Upon its release, Keep It Goin Xav received positive reviews from publications. It was awarded the "Best New Music" accolade from Pitchfork, they also deemed it the 29th best album of the year as well as the best rap album of the year, described by writer Alphonse Pierre as a "bottle-popping celebration". Pierre later stated, "Not often is music this off the walls also this grounded". However, he criticized DJ Rennessy's appearance as lacking an "identifiable charisma of memorable mixtape hosts" as well as criticizing the mixtape's slower moments.[7]HotNewHipHop listed Keep It Goin Xav as one of the best releases of January 2024, adding it "keeps you wanting more".[10] Complex's Jon Barlas deemed Keep It Goin Xav a "defining moment" and "a semi-breakthrough" for Xaviersobased, which was followed by the inclusion of "Need Me" in their mid-year list regarding the best songs of 2024.[9] Keep It Goin Xav's opening track, "FanOut", was compared to Drake's 2011 album Take Care by the Fader[6], as well as a chopped and screwed song with a sped-up second half by Pitchfork, who compared the track "Special" to French Montana, "UToldMeIWasAFuckUpGir" to Duwap Kaine, "KlkMiHijo" to Gucci Mane, and "This Far" to Lil Tracy.[7][6]

Pierre stated that Xavier "puts it all together" on the mixtape "without losing the off-the-cuff randomness of fucking around on SoundCloud", adding that Xavier was "standing out from the pack of indistinguishable internet rappers".[11] Evan Rytlewski felt that Xavier's take on youth's brevity added extra depth to the music.[12] The Fader considered it the 33rd best album of the year, writing that Xavier's "aqueous sound is brought to Marianas Trench-level depths" and that the mixtape "proves he can throw a rager in uncharted territory and have it hit just as hard".[5]
