Niccolò di Angelo, commonly known as Nico di Angelo, is a fictional character in the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles by Rick Riordan. He is a main character in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series, The Heroes of Olympus series, and The Trials of Apollo series, respectively, all by Rick Riordan, as well as the protagonist and the title character of The Nico di Angelo Adventures series co-written by American authors Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro.[1][2]
Nico di Angelo is the first openly gay character and one of the most popular characters in the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles.[3][4][5][6][7] He is 10 years old in his first appearance in The Titan's Curse in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series and 14 years old in his latest appearance in The Sun and the Star in The Nico di Angelo Adventures series.[8][9] He is an Italian boy with black hair, dark brown eyes, and white skin. He is the boyfriend of the American-born Greek demigod Will Solace who is the son of the Greek God Apollo and the American mortal Naomi Solace.[10][11]
Born in Venice, Italy, Nico di Angelo is an Italian-born Greek demigod who is the son of the Greek God Hades and the Italian mortal Maria di Angelo. He is also the stepson of the Greek Goddess Persephone, the brother of the Italian-born Greek demigod Bianca di Angelo, and the half-brother of the American-born Roman demigod Hazel Levesque who is the daughter of the Roman God Pluto and the American mortal Marie Levesque.[12]
As a demigod hero, Nico di Angelo has superhuman strength, superhuman reflexes, superhuman durability, superhuman pain resilience, and indomitable willpower. He has the powers of geokinesis,[a] necromancy,[b] phobikinesis,[c] thermokinesis,[d] telepathy,[e] and teleportation,[f] among other powers. He is known as the Ghost King after defeating and taking the title from Minos in The Battle of the Labyrinth in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series.[13]
As an Italian-born Greek demigod, Nico di Angelo is fluent in both the Greek language and the Italian language, as shown in House of Hades in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. Through his knowledge of the Italian language, he can also understand some other Romance languages, such as both the Spanish language and the Portuguese language, as shown in The Blood of Olympus in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series.
The creator of the character, Rick Riordan who taught both history and the English language as a teacher at both public middle schools and private middle schools in both California and Texas,[14][15] has stated that he had his character come out of the closet to give his LGBTI students in particular and all LGBTI children in general a demigod hero of their own in his Camp Half-Blood Chronicles.[16][17]
13 year old Greek American novice actor Levi Chrisopulos will portray Nico di Angelo in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians television series on Disney+.[18][19][20][21][22]
