Palash Das is an Indian politician affiliated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist). As of 2025, he serves as the District Secretary of the CPI(M)'s North 24 Parganas district unit in West Bengal. He is also a member of the party’s West Bengal State Committee and the State Secretariat. He is the chief editor of a prominent weekly newspaper “Deshhitoishhee”(দেশহীতৈষী), which is a mouthpiece of CPI(m) West Bengal state committee.
Political career
District leadership
Das gained public and media attention following the CPI(M)'s district conference in North 24 Parganas in early 2025. In a rare internal party election, delegates voted to remove the long-serving district secretary Mrinal Chakraborty, despite opposition from the state leadership. Palash Das was appointed convener of the newly formed district committee and later elected district secretary, an event noted for reflecting a shift toward democratic decision-making within the party.[1]
State leadership
Das currently serves as a member of the CPI(M)'s West Bengal State Committee and its smaller decision-making body, the State Secretariat. His inclusion in these bodies is seen as part of a generational shift in the state leadership of the party.[1]
Public activism
In February 2024, Das co-led a CPI(M) delegation to Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas, after allegations of land grabbing and sexual violence surfaced against local ruling party figures. Along with fellow state secretariat member Minakshi Mukherjee, he met affected residents and held public meetings, drawing media attention to the issue.[2]
He also participated in a major protest rally organized by CPI(M) in Kolkata in October 2023, which called for action against alleged corruption by political figures and demanded accountability from central agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate and CBI.[3]
Electoral record
Das has contested elections for the CPI(M) in the Bidhannagar Assembly constituency (formerly Rajarhat-New Town) in the 2011, 2016, and 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections. He holds a B.Sc. degree from the University of Calcutta and a diploma in systems management from NIIT, completed in 1994. He has no criminal cases against him and has regularly filed disclosures under election commission rules.[4]
