Sodaliphilus pleomorphus is a species of Gram-negative and strictly anaerobic, pleomorphic bacteria in the family Muribaculaceae. It was first isolated from the feces of an Aachen minipig and formally described in 2020 as the type species of the genus Sodaliphilus.[1][2]
Taxonomy and nomenclature
The genus name derives from Latin sodalis ("companion") and Greek -philus ("loving"), reflecting enhanced growth when co-cultured with other gut microbes.[3] S. pleomorphus is currently the sole species with standing in nomenclature.[3]
Ecology and distribution
High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomic surveys show S. pleomorphus to be prevalent in commercial pig herds worldwide.[1][2]
